Statistical machine translation’s creation also coincided with the rise of the internet. Then, they could program these patterns into the computer and it would translate quicker and more naturally. Researchers theorized that if they looked at enough text, they could find patterns in the translations. Statistical machine translation used parallel texts in different languages to create statistical models. In 1990, IBM undertook the first statistical machine translation (SMT). 1990s-2015: Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) Now you didn’t need to spend lots of time programming grammar and vocabulary rules in the computer.
